What is the Life in the UK test?

A computer-based exam you must pass to apply for British citizenship or to settle in the UK (Indefinite Leave to Remain). It tests your knowledge of British history, values and traditions, all from the official handbook Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents.

How many questions are there and how long is the test?

There are 24 multiple-choice questions and you have 45 minutes. The questions are chosen at random.

What is the pass mark?

You must answer at least 18 of 24 questions correctly (75%). You can get a maximum of 6 wrong.

How much does it cost?

The fee is £50. You pay £50 again for each resit.

How do I book the test?

Book online through GOV.UK at least 3 days in advance and attend a registered test centre. Use only the official GOV.UK site to avoid scam fees.

What do I need to bring?

Valid photo ID that matches your booking, plus proof of address. The photo must look like you.

Who needs to take the test?

Most applicants for settlement (ILR) or British citizenship. You are exempt if you are under 18 or 65+, or have a long-term medical condition (with evidence).

What is the test based on?

Only the official handbook Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents (3rd edition).

How long is my result valid?

A pass never expires — you only need to pass once for both settlement and citizenship.

What happens if I fail?

You can resit as often as needed, but must wait at least 7 days and pay £50 each time.

Can I take the test in another language?

The official test is in English (Welsh in Wales, Scottish Gaelic in Scotland). A practice app in your own language helps you understand the material first.

How should I prepare?

Read the handbook and practise mock tests until you score above 75%. Reviewing your wrong answers with spaced repetition is the most effective method.
